cerberus horse & six pack of turtles

54, New Poetry by Hunter A. Allund

cereberus horse

Death opens the box
fingers the cemetery
looks for the right shade
of lipstick

to know
herself
is to survive
herself

for now, she is
a more translatable version
of
before

insanity is
alluring
the importance of trapdoors
in one’s head

there she was,
sewing dreams
together
with the usual thread

allergic to time
the skull beside her
sewn together
by birth

NO:
a direction
pointing:
a figment of ghost

phasing through the cemetery
to an abandoned church
where a three-headed horse
chuffs, canters in the hollowness

hoof on stone
          on hoof
                    on stone
                              on hoof

in the echo
swallowing dreams
with its eyes
a bit of soul kidnapped

causing her mind
to bleed ecstatically
the earth shifts
under her skin

falls through her thoughts
into inferno eyes
beckoning her
to pet the horse’s neck

Six Pack of Turtles

beach.
flex my butt now and then
to impress people who pass
toes curling crab shells now and then
the urge to squawk like a gull
the sand warmer than the air, the water

a scream beyond
there are many possible causes
but always the worst

shoreline with fleshy trees of citrus fruit
is it rude to drink a paperbagged drink
while the lifeguard swims
child drowns

it appears the secret to swimming
is acting like your life
doesn’t depend on it
