Handala Walking

art/video, Songs of the Sunbirds by Cinematicz Underground

This mixed media animation is inspired by Handala. Before he smells the red poppy you can still see if face. The explosion represents the Nakba. Which causes him to turn his back on the world that betrayed him. Then he begins to resemble the Handala we know with torn clothes and prickly hair. By placing these around the city, I let viewers take in a bit of the story each time and piece together his journey along their own.

cinematicz.underground is an anonymous street artist and graphic designer drawing from the experiences as a Palestinian in exile. They create art inspired by the longing to return to their family’s village in Yaffa. Committed to raising awareness about Palestine, they use their platform to teach people how to wheat-paste; and they have created an online community of Pro-Palestinian guerilla artists dedicated to taking back the streets with art.
